URGENT ACTION NEEDED IN NEW JERSEY: October Vote Threatens Freedom of Choice in Healthcare

Freedom of healthcare choice in New Jersey is facing a serious threat with the NJ Assembly Bill A2933 / Senate Bill S1941 vote scheduled for early in October. This bill and its identical counterpart in the NJ Senate would prevent any practitioner other than a dietician to teach, consult, or advise about health, nutrition, supplements, diet, food, or food materials.

Contaminated milk products from China have sickened over 50,000 infants and caused the death of four.  This is the latest in a string of problems with China's food safety system.  Currently, the U.S. does not import dairy products from China, but there are other food products, like chicken, that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering allowing in.  Will you ask congress to keep the current ban on Chinese poultry?

TAKE ACTION: Tainted Chinese Milk. Ask Congress to protect American consumers by maintaining the ban on Chinese chicken.

Red Clover Blocks Neurological Damage of MSG

Red Clover Blocks Neurological Damage From MSG by Barbara L. Minton
Adult: Although dosage and administration will vary from individual to individual, general guidelines are as follows:

  • Dried herb (used for tea): 1 to 2 tsp dried flowers or flowering tops steeped in 8 oz hot water for 1/2 hour; take 2 to 3 cups daily
  • Powdered herb (available in capsules): 2 to 6 capsules (500 mg each) per day
  • Tincture (1:5, 30% alcohol): 60 to 100 drops (3 to 5 mL) three times per day; may add to hot water as a tea
  • Fluid Extract (1:1): 1 mL three times per day; may add to hot water as a tea
  • Standardized red clover isoflavone extracts: directions on product labels should be carefully followed
  • Topical treatment (such as for psoriasis or eczema): an infusion, liquid extract, or ointment containing 10 to 15% flowerheads
  • As mentioned above, isolated red clover isoflavones have shown promise in the treatment of a variety of conditions. It may slow bone loss and even boost bone mineral density in pre and perimenopausal women. It may protect against heart disease in several ways, and has been associated with an increase in HDL cholesterol in pre and postmenopausal women. One study found that menopausal women who took red clover supplements had more flexible and stronger arteries. Red clover may also have blood thinning properties which help prevent blood clots. It also appears to improve blood flow.It is important to remember, however, that extracts of red clover isoflavones are very different from the whole herb — in fact, they represent only a small portion of the entire herb in a highly concentrated form.

Salmonella Risk Prompts Pet Food Recall

Possible Contamination of Mars Petcare Products Could Pose Risk to People and Pets By Caroline Wilbert WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD
Mars dry pet food (Sept. 12, 2008)

Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of all dry pet food products produced at its plant in Everson, Pa. between Feb. 18 and July 29, citing potential contamination with salmonella. Mars did not say how much pet food is involved, but said the recall reaches 31 states and various brands and said the action was taken as a precaution. “Even though no direct link between products produced at the Everson plant and human or pet illness has been made, we are taking this precautionary action to protect pets and their owners,” the company said. Mars said it stopped production at the plant July 29 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced in Everson and two isolated cases of people infected with salmonella. Mars said salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats and, if there is cross–contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in humans also. The company said consumers should look for “17″ as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC for products affected. For Pedigree products, they should look for “PAE” on the bottom line. They can also call 1-877-568-4463 or consult  www.petcare.mars.com. The brand names include some items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.

Country of Origin Labeling on Food Products: Take Action
In August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released their plan for mandatory country-of-origin labeling of meat, produce, and nuts.  After years of delay caused by the meat, food processing and grocery industries, country-of-origin labeling (COOL) goes into effect September 30, 2008.

Thanks to the 2008 Farm Bill, the USDA rules establish strong standards for which meat products can be called ‘Product of the U.S.™, but the rules also contain a massive loophole that will allow large quantities of food to go without labeling.  Because USDA established a very broad definition for processed™ foods that are exempt from COOL, most frozen vegetables, pork products and nuts will not have to be labeled. USDA is accepting comments on COOL until the end of September.  Tell them to close the loopholes for processed™ foods!

Why Do Our Eyes Blink?

September 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

HPATHY: FACIAL TICS: Are we all feeling a little sick lately? At a loss?
What with financial bankrupcy and the anniversary of 9/11 . . .
Our “focus” these days are on our EYES…
Click the link to read story about a boy with gestures and blinking eyes.

How often does the human eye blink?
The rate of blinking varies, but on average the eye blinks once every five seconds. That's equal to 17,000 times each day or 6.25 million times a year.
Source: Brandreth, Gyles. Your Vital Statistics, p. 26.

Noun 1. blink of an eye - a very short time (as the time it takes the eye to blink or the heart to beat); “if I had the chance I'd do it in a flash”

HUMOR: JON STEWART Highly recommended to lighten the soul through laughter which pokes fun at the truth.

Blinking, known less commonly as nictating, is the rapid closing and opening of the eyelid. It is an essential function of the eye that helps spread tears across and remove irritants from the surface of the cornea and conjunctiva. Blink speed can be affected by elements such as fatigue, eye injury, medication, and disease. A person blinks approximately once every two to ten seconds. The blinking rate is determined by the “blinking center”, but it can also be affected by external stimulus. When an animal (usually human) chooses to blink only one eye as a signal to another in a social setting (a form of body language), it is known as winking. However, some animals (for example, tortoises and hamsters) blink their eyes independently of each other.

Blinking provides moisture to the eye by irrigation using tears and a lubricant the eyes secrete. The eyelid provides suction across the eye from the tear duct to the entire eyeball to keep it from drying out.

Blinking also protects the eye from irritants. Eyelashes are hairs attached to the upper and lower eyelids that create a line of defense against dust and other elements to the eye. The eyelashes catch most of these irritants before they reach the eyeball.

Why We Blink: To oil, lube, and filter the eyes.

Blinking, as opposed to batting, our eyes automatically supplies two forms of moisture to our eyes, to keep them from drying out, and to keep foreign matter from entering and irritating our eyes. Eyelids themselves, our built-in “wind-shield wipers,” are merely folds of skin, controlled by muscles capable of expanding and contracting so rapidly, that blinking does not impair our vision. Mother Nature lined the rims of our eyelids with 20-30 sebaceous, oil-producing glands, which are located between our eyelashes, and are invisible to the naked eye. Blinking automatically coats the eyelid and eyelashes with the lubricant it secretes, to prevent them from drying out.

Blinking also protects the eye from dryness by irrigating, not by irritating, the eye, The eyelid, through suction, automatically draws the fluid we cry with from the well we refer to as the tear duct over the eyeball, to irrigate, and to moisturize the eye. The process is similar to the manner in which the farmer uses water to irrigate his crops during a dry spell.

Yet another benefit of blinking, is to shield the eye from foreign bodies. Our eyelashes, short, curved, hairs, attached to the eyelids, serve as dust-catchers, as the blinking reflex causes them automatically to lower, when exposed to harsh elements. Nature endowed the camel with extraordinarily long, curly, eyelashes, to protect his eyes from sudden sandstorms in the desert. Incidentally, the “camel eyelash” look is one many women attempt to duplicate by using an eyelash curler! Eyebrows, by the way, also serve their purpose, as they catch the run-off perspiration produces.

Medical causes of excessive eye blinking
:

  • Dry eyes
  • Eye foreign body
  • Lens infection
  • Eyelid spasms (see Eyelid twitch)
  • Some causes of eyelid spasms:
  • Nervous system disorder
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke
  • Anxiety

Eyeblink conditioning (EBC) is a form of classical conditioning that has been used extensively to study neural structures and mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. The procedure is relatively simple and usually consists of pairing an auditory or visual stimulus with an eyeblink-eliciting unconditioned stimulus (US - can be a mild puff of air to the cornea or a mild shock). Naïve organisms initially produce a reflexive, unconditioned response (UR - blink or extension of nictitating membrane) that follows US onset. After many CS-US pairings, an association is formed such that a learned blink, or conditioned response (CR), occurs and precedes US onset. The magnitude of learning is generally gauged by the percentage of all paired CS-US trials that result in a CR. Under optimal conditions, well-trained animals produce a high percentage of CRs (> 90%). The conditions necessary for, and the physiological mechanisms that govern, eyeblink CR learning have been studied across many mammalian species, including mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, cats, and humans. Historically, rabbits have been the most popular research subjects.

Christian SONG: In a Blink of an eye that is when
I'll be closer to You than I've ever been
Time will fly, but until then
I'll embrace every moment I'm given
There's a reason I'm alive for a blink of an eye

Citizen's for Health to Publish White Paper on Risk to DSHEA

September 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Citizens For Health to publish white paper about the ongoing risk to DSHEA.

Do you know that the Dietary Supplement, Health and Education Act (DSHEA) - the federal law that gives you access to dietary supplements without a doctor's prescription - is under constant surveillance and attack by forces that want supplements to be regulated as drugs? Did you know that the American Medical Association claims that most Americans want greater government regulation of dietary supplements? Did you know that one major media outlet has called for revision of DSHEA as “ill-conceived legislation?” Have you considered that only half of those who were in the U.S. Congress in 1994 when DSHEA was unanimously passed remain in office today? That number is likely to drop further in less than 6 months.

The American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) is promoting a general petition to reform the FDA. We applaud AAHF's effort to bring attention to the agency's questionable motives and effectiveness.

Marijuana Ingredient May Fight Bacteria

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Hemp: Cannibus Sativa Researchers in Italy and Britain have found that the main active ingredient in marijuana - tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC - and related compounds show promise as antibacterial agents, particularly against microbial strains that are already resistant to several classes of drugs. . .

The researchers say they don’t know how the cannabinoids work, and whether they would be effective as systemic antibiotics would require much more research and trials. But the compounds may prove useful sooner as a topical agent against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, to prevent the microbes from colonizing on the skin.
