TOP NINE CURED CASES By Mary Aspinwall

1. MIGRAINE MADNESS: A boy aged 12 had migraine attacks that often came on after over-excitement. They were so severe that during them he was tempted to jump out of the window. For this reason he always wanted his mother to stay with him. He would bite both his own hand and his mother’s during the height of the pain, which was throbbing, left-sided and began over the eye. He was photophobic during attacks and suffered stomach cramps with vomiting. Glonoine worked beautifully, not only because it is a classic migraine remedy, but also because one of the strange symptoms it produced in the “provers” (original testers of the substance) was the desire to quite literally jump out of the window.

2. SIDE-TO-SIDE CYSTS: A young woman of eighteen had a long, ongoing history of very painful periods. A few months earlier she had had two cysts removed from her left ovary. Since then she had had no energy. Unfortunately, the cystic pain had returned soon after the op. The strange thing was it alternated between the left and right hand side (probably depending on which side was ovulating). She had become increasingly withdrawn and wouldn’t speak to teachers or students at school. She was often on the verge of tears. She felt stupid when she spoke to anyone and scared to say anything. She said several times that she believed people were laughing at her and whispering about her. Her symptoms fitted a medicine called Lac caninum. One of the main symptoms this medicine can produce in a healthy volunteer is pain which alternate sides. It also matched her mental state very well. Her first period after the remedy was more painful, but her energy had greatly improved and she said she didn’t ‘notice the pain as much’. She didn’t worry about people laughing or whispering about her anymore and she was talking to people a bit more. She felt more confident. After three months her physical symptoms all resolved and she was also feeling very good mentally and emotionally.

3. COUGHING BY THE CLOCK: A boy aged 8 had used inhalers for his asthma since the age of 6. He had suffered from occasional accelerated heart rate whilst on the inhalers and didn’t like taking them. He had an unproductive cough that came on one hour after going to bed (at about 9pm). When the cough was very bad he would vomit and continued to vomit, without any relief, until he was retching bile. Ipecac is well known as the remedy for incessant vomiting without relief and vomiting related to coughing and worked beautifully.

4. SCREAMING FOR STRUCTURE: A very neat looking young boy came to see me. He liked to keep his own room very tidy and hated it if anyone moved anything out of place. He didn’t enjoy visiting friends and had a very strong desire to stay at home, where he kept to a very strict routine of his own devising. He loved to eat eggs, but they had to be cooked for a very precise number of seconds or he didn’t enjoy them at all. The theme running through everything he said was his strong need for structure in order to feel safe and protected. Even the eggs he so loved represented a safe, protective structure. His many disturbing physical symptoms responded beautifully to a dose of Calcerea carbonica, made from the lining of the inside of an oyster shell, another naturally occurring example of security.

5. DON’T TIE ME DOWN: Compare this to a case of a teenage girl who visited me with extremely violent menstrual pains. The cause of her dis-ease was almost the exact opposite. She had a horror or routine of any kind. It would make her feel suffocated and trapped. She hated tight clothing, especially around the neck, for the same reason. She loved to be in company, to talk, to dance and generally have fun. The funny thing about her period pains was that they came before menstruation and disappeared almost as soon as the period began, as this represented a type of release. The pains completely went with one dose of Lachesis (extremely diluted venom of the Bushmaster snake). Lachesis is particularly well-suited to people who hate to be constricted in any way.

6. CATARACTS CURED: Once again Lachesis came to the rescue in the case of a woman of 47 came for treatment of cataracts. She couldn’t focus properly and said it was like seeing through smoke. Bright light caused a knife-like, yet painless, sensation in her eyes. Her lower field of vision was the worst affected. She was under a lot of stress and was an insulin-dependent diabetic. She was also taking thyroxin. She had a history of gallstones and experienced the colic as also knife-like. it matched her symptoms well, including her vision difficulties. A month after taking Lachesis she was able to undo some strings, something she hadn’t been able to do before and she felt her vision was better, but wanted to take a test to be sure. The knife like sensations had gone. Her blood sugar levels were lower. Her sleep was better and she felt calmer. She felt livelier and able to think more clearly. A subsequent test revealed that the cataracts had gone.

7. AS GOOD AS GOLD: A woman of 38 came for treatment of depression. She described it as a blackness, despair and hopelessness that she had had on and off since childhood. She couldn’t wait to die so it would be over, although she did not contemplate suicide. She had suffered a nasty injury that left her feeling less capable in her work. Her unhappiness centred on the fact that she felt she had disappointed her father and not lived up to the high hopes he had for her. She worried that she had married beneath her class and so lost status. This is often a major concern for those needing Aurum metallicum, more commonly known as gold.

After the remedy she had a follow-up and said ‘I’ve been perfect since…I feel better now than I can remember feeling.’ She doesn’t worry about her status or achievements whilst she feels well. Every few months she repeats the remedy when the same feelings and symptoms return.

8. HAMMER HORROR: A woman of 46 years of age came for treatment of her eczema. It was on the palms and fingertips of both hands and her left foot. She had had outbreaks on and off for the past twenty years and these had been treated with hydrocortisone creams. These no longer had any effect, so she had also been taking cortisone tablets for the previous two weeks. The skin was desquamating and very itchy and her hands were puffy. She also suffered from headaches, pre-menstrually. She loved company and felt a little cut off from friends and family by a recent move. She had a recurrent dream of being abandoned at the top of a hill, which she found very frightening. Feeling better for company and having a fear of abandonment both pointed to a homeopathic medicine called Pulsatilla. She came to see me regularly over the next few months and said she was feeling good. Her energy was better and her headaches infrequent and less severe. Her hands were appalling. Even water burnt them as if it were acid. The skin was hard and yellow. It was tight, cracked easily and flakes of skin more than 2 inches long fell off. Both hands discharged thick yellow pus onto her gauze dressings, reminding me of a Hammer Horror film. She was unable to do anything for herself, but never complained. I was utterly impressed by her stoicism. Her perseverance was finally rewarded. At the end of the six months she came to see me and her hands were beautiful. The skin was brand new.

9. SPIDERGIRL: A girl of 6 came for treatment of frequent outbreaks of impetigo around her right eye. She had had it on and off for eighteen months. It had been conventionally treated with steroid creams. She found it difficult to go to sleep on her own. She had a ‘giddy feeling’ in her stomach and was generally fidgety and restless. She had nightmares about spiders. Her mother said she liked to do dangerous and forbidden things. She also said she was very curious. She drew me a stick picture of her family in bright primary colours and they all looked like spiders! I prescribed Tarantula Hispanica a homeopathic medicine made form the spider. Afterwards she was able to sleep alone and the bad dreams stopped. Her giddy feeling disappeared. Her mother said the remedy made her very calm, which was just as well because she had to deal with quite a physical clear out. An area on her left foot (corresponding to the spleen) opened up and began discharging pus, as did her left thumb and right elbow. Her right eye filled with pus and swelled closed. She also had swollen glands in her neck. Both the child and the mother were very happy with the situation, as I had predicited there would be a kind of “spring clean” after the medicine. Other members of the family were not so pleased with the results! This went on for over a week. At the time of writing years later she remains well and has had no major outbreak since.

LAST WORD: Please note that all prescriptions mentioned here were given after a lengthy interview and careful selection of the most similar, which is to say, homeopathic medicine. The similarity encompassed not only the complaint but the individual who was suffering from it.

Whilst it is relatively easy to learn how to prescribe for first aid situations or genuine acute illnesses, in order to get effective results for chronic or repeated illness please visit a professional homeopath. Â
