Learning to Think Like a Homeopath Using a Journal Method

What is your total state? Get a pen and paper to get started with your journal.Write what comes to mind about a problem that is on your mind. Just write for 15 minutes straight. Whenever you pause, go back and review what you've already written. The ask yourself, “what do I mean by some of the words that seem important?” Then continue to write again, until each pause, when you go back and review, then choose what direction you go forward.

Connecting our emotional, physical, mental and spiritual selves.

  • When we have a problem with our health, how many “levels” of healing do we acknowledge?
  • Often, we're only aware of the pathology and the symptom: The migraine needs to be cured. The pain behind the right eye that feels like a hot iron poker needs to go away. But what about the associated emotion? We experience deep sadness when the migraine comes during our vacation.
  • How do we perceive our selves? We may feel unworthy of love or fun because everyone else must be taken care of first.
  • Can we identify and connect with our sensations? We feel vulnerable, shattered, fragmented, or not put together.
  • Once identified, it may be possible for the expressions to reveal the source of energy that influences us in all dimensions of our lives. Where does it begin, move and flow? Does it go into the ground and up into the sky like a tree?

All these “levels” are layers of human experience. While we often feel pain (and health) on the physical level, there are many, more subtle layers that ultimately define our health and wellness. These are:

  • Emotional feelings
  • Images: often seen when meditating, daydreaming or in dreams
  • Sensations: which are so much a part of us, we often can't identify them without significant probing from a homeopath and objective introspection.

Our sense of connection to the universe or direct energy can be enhanced with regular journal entries.

Think about it this way . .

  • When we turn attention inwards, we first become aware of our body and mind, and the sensations from various parts of the body, including our thoughts and emotions. Then we become aware of a deeper world of imagination. Then we get in touch with an overall experience of sensation, which is a general awareness in the whole being, body and mind.

The Art and Science of Homeopathy

  • When we have the opportunity to describe these many layered experiences to an objective observer, who knows how to select a medicine that works on an energetic level to address, reduce and often times clear our discomforts and symptoms we have experienced the true definition of homeopathy.
  • Whether we realize it or not, all these levels are part of us. We experience life physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

What do we experience and how can it be interpreted?

  • For example, I may feel a burning pain in my right arm because I do too much with my right side, and I'm always doing my best to feel accepted in the world. Here is the point where the mind and body express the state that causes the physical problem.
  • With careful probing from a homeopath to help articulate the suffering in as much detail as possible, it is possible to discover even deeper layers and connections. For example, I might speak about a burning pain and my need to feel accepted in the world using words like resistance, force and weight. These terms express a deeper layer that might benefit from a homeopathic remedy. Through this realization, often we tap into a collective consciousness to identify the exact qualities of the substance we require at the moment.
  • Another person's life experience might be the description of a bird that attacks its prey and flies at jet-like speeds. This person might benefit greatly from the remedy made from eagle's blood, if all other general guiding symptoms match this remedy picture.

What have we learned so far?

  • That our language can help us connect emotion and physical ailments or discomfort through word association.
  • We can also identify significant issues and images through the journaling process.
  • Homeopathic remedies help to balance and remove the energetic imprint that is causing the suffering, in order to produce healing on all levels.

After going through the exercise you will learn how to analyze common themes.

Miasms as a coping method.

CASE STUDY EXAMPLE: HEALING A CRACKED LIFE FOR A 28 YEAR OLD WOMAN

This woman was asked about the reason for making an appointment with a homeopath. The 28 year old woman says that her sinus headaches are not improving. In fact, last night they were extremely horrible. She says, “It aches like anything. It came as a sudden constant pain on the left side and including the eye, like a plate. It was hurting here.” (She gestures a line through the top of her head.)

In this reply, the patient has given the pathology (sinus headaches), an emotion (horrible), and a local sensation (achy pain, sudden, constant, on left side through her eye). She also has given a visual image that it is like a plate. This image is a direct expression from her chief complaint. The homeopath will explore this idea to see if it expresses a mind/body connection and a deeper sensation.

Finding out why these headaches are such a challenge to her life . . .

The patient says she can't speak or do anything when she has these headaches. “It would be less painful to die. It feels like it could burst my head. It feels like so much pressure, like an earthquake, like a cracking in a line.”

How the homeopath understands the patient’s level of experience.

  • At this point, the patient has reached a level of consciousness that is beyond the headache. The sensation of a sinus headache feeling like a cracking line is totally unique to this patient. How does this earthquake image make any sense? This image is what resonates to the natural world and is the clue to the remedy that will cure her sinus headaches and restore harmony.

The woman further describes the sensation as a kind of lava; it is soft, not solid, like jelly. It is like rubber, more transparent, yellowish. It is coming out of the crack but is not coming out like water. It is not cold or hot. It is room temperature. It is sticky.

She continues, “This crack is like the crack in my relationship.”

  • The patient now has made the connection that the crack is an image she experiences physically as well as emotionally (a mind/body symptom). It is at this point in the interview that she begins to cry. This understanding of the crack relates to her marriage, which also feels like a crack. This is a confirmation to the homeopath that the road taken from the chief complaint is reaching a deep core level with the patient.

Further detail when going deeper into the source description.

  • The patient describes images of lava that do not have the quality of lava, but more like the substance of sap from a tree. The remedy Terebinthinum is made from the sap of trees and proved to be curative for this patient. Her sinus headaches went away and she found a way to resolve her issues with her husband.

Results after taking the energetic homeopathic remedy.

She said, “I am going with everything, even the crack, I try to grow with it. I have faith that the future will be better, and faith in my relationship now.”

  • The level the patient reached through the homeopathic consultation was at the Level of Energy, which is to name the qualities of the substance that will heal her. The patient tapped into a collective consciousness that helped her describe the remedy that she needs. She has traveled from the physical realm (all consuming with the pain of the headache), to connecting to her emotional life through the image of the crack as the pain in her head and the pain in her relationship. This awareness is the process of healing and finding harmony through homeopathic consultation and treatment.

What happens when we address these deeper layers?

  • Often, it's much more than relief from our original complaint. Because we've benefited from holistic medicine working at the energy level, we also experience a deep and profound shift in consciousness. We create many more choices for looking at ourselves and the world around us.
